Dr. Manuela Colucci
Immunology and pediatric nephrology since 2009.
Since 2009, my research projects are focused on the role of B cells and on the effects exerted by B-cell depleting anti-CD20 monoclonal antibodies (rituximab and ofatumumab) in pediatric idiopathic nephrotic syndrome. I have demonstrated that memory B cells are expanded during the active phase of the disease and that, in patients who received anti-CD20 treatment, the reconstitution of this B-cell subpopulation is highly predictive of relapse.
I have also evaluated the long-term effects of anti-CD20 treatment, showing a persistent reduction of memory B cells and a severe hypogammaglobulinemia in many patients, which can predispose them to severe infections.
